Sarita is a Professor of Media, Culture and Communications at Brunel University London. She is interested in questions of social change, inequality, communities, and cultural representation. Sarita has published widely on representations of ‘race’, public service broadcasting, diversity and media policy. Her first book, Representing Black Britain, traces the cultural history of black and Asian representation on British Television (Sage, 2002) and her latest edited collection, Community Filmmaking (Routledge, 2017), considers the community, participatory and collaborative media practices involved in the community mode of filmmaking.

Sarita has been the Principal Investigator on a number of externally funded projects including an AHRC-funded study in collaboration with the British Film Institute on Diasporic film audiences, and a multi-partner AHRC Connected Communities project on community filmmaking and cultural diversity. Since 2014, she has led on the research development and delivery of the Creative Interruptions project.
